Art and Design
Intent
At Beckermet l Primary School, we are committed to providing all children with learning opportunities to engage in Art and Design. We believe that Art and Design education should engage, inspire and challenge our children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As children progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of Art and Design.
Implementation
As a school, and in accordance with the National Curriculum’s expectations, we aim to ensure that all pupils:
- Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
- Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
- Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
As a school, we have chosen to use a published scheme, Kapow Art and Design Scheme of Work to teach the Art and Design Curriculum in Key Stage 1 and 2. The Kapow Art and Design Scheme of work enables our teachers to deliver creative, inspiring and engaging lessons and provides for progression in skills and knowledge. We are confident that the scheme of work meets the requirements for the National Curriculum for Art and Design. The Kapow Art scheme of work is designed with four strands that run throughout. These are:
- Making skills
- Formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour)
- Knowledge of artists
- Evaluating
Through Kapow Primary’s Art and design scheme of work, these strands are revisited in every unit. In the art and design skills and formal elements of art units, pupils will have the opportunity to learn and practise skills discretely. The knowledge and skills from these units are then applied throughout the other units in the scheme. Key skills are revisited again and again with increasing complexity in a spiral curriculum model. This allows pupils to revisit and build on their previous learning.
Coordinated whole-school project work ensures that art is given high status in the curriculum and the school takes part in an annual ‘Arts week’ which enables further focus on children’s artistic skills and knowledge.
EYFS
The EYFS staff team plan for children to experience creative opportunities and develop art skills within the EYFS curriculum. In EYFS our pupils explore and use a variety of media and materials through a combination of child initiated and adult directed activities. There are always opportunities for children to engage in exploring colour and use for a particular purpose, respond to a range of media and materials and develop their understanding in order to manipulate and create different effects, develop skills to use simple tools and techniques competently and appropriately. The children’s learning is further enhanced with a whole school arts week in the summer term where the children have the opportunity for collaborative working and exploring the different styles and techniques of a range of artists.
Resources
Online Art and Design plans and resources, produced by Kapow, are available online and also on the shared drive. All resources bespoke to year groups are in class stock cupboards. Any materials shared between year groups are stored in the stock cupboard in the discovery room. (Printing paints, rollers, powder paints etc)
Displays
Every class displays their art work within their classrooms. The subject lead keeps a record of the displays.
Sketch books
In EYFS and KS1 children use a combination of individual books and floor book to evidence work.
In KS2 children experiment and practise technique in sketch books. Children either complete their final piece or stick a photo into their sketch book where it is evaluated.
Community links
At Beckermet Primary School, we look to strengthen our links with local galleries (Lowes Court and Florence mine) by working together on projects. Whilst studying artists from other cultures and times, we welcome the opportunity to work with local artists.
Impact
After the implementation of the Kapow Primary Art and Design scheme, pupils should leave primary school equipped with a range of techniques and the confidence and creativity to form a strong foundation for their Art and Design learning at Key Stage 3 and beyond.
The impact of the scheme of work is that children will:-
- Produce creative work, exploring and recording their ideas and experiences.
- Be proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
- Evaluate and analyse creative works using subject- specific language.
- Know about great artists and the historical and cultural development of their art.
- Meet the end of key stage expectations outlined in the National Curriculum for Art and Design.
